Purpose

  • College Admissions: The SAT is designed to assess a student's readiness for college and is a common requirement for admission to undergraduate programs in the US.

Test Sections

  • Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW): Evaluates reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and analytical writing skills through passages and multiple-choice questions.

  • Mathematics: Tests math skills in algebra, problem-solving, data analysis, and some trigonometry and geometry concepts.

Scoring

  • Total Score: Ranges from 400 to 1600, combining scores from the EBRW and Math sections.

  • Section Scores: Each section is scored on a scale from 200 to 800.

  • Essay (optional): If taken, the essay is scored separately on a scale from 6 to 24.

Test Format

  • Paper-Based Test: Traditionally administered on paper, with answer sheets for multiple-choice questions and an optional essay.

  • Computer-Based Test: Offered in some locations, allowing test-takers to complete the exam on a computer.

Frequency and Registration

  • Test Dates: Administered multiple times a year, usually in October, November, December, March, May, and June.

  • Registration: Students need to register for specific test dates in advance and pay a registration fee.

Preparation

  • Study Resources: Various prep books, online resources, practice tests, and courses are available to help students prepare.

  • Practice Tests: Taking practice tests is highly recommended to familiarize oneself with the test format and timing.

Use in College Admissions

  • Admissions Consideration: SAT scores, along with high school GPA and other factors, are used by colleges and universities in their admissions decisions.

  • Score Reporting: Test-takers can send score reports to colleges of their choice to include in their application.

Optional Essay

  • Writing Section: Involves analyzing a provided text and constructing an essay that evaluates the author's argument.

  • College Requirement: Some colleges may require or recommend the SAT essay, while others do not consider it in admissions decisions.
